Autumn at Butchard Gardens
Butchert Gardens is one of the most spectacular gardens in North America. It is just outside of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. There are several gardens that are always changing with the seasons. This maple was in full color in late September. The branch of the tree was in a horizontal plane that allowed me to use a shallow depth of field which allowed me to pick a point of focus and make the leaves seem to fade into the background.

Sunrise Silhouette—Monument Valley—Navajo Nation
Monument Valley is a vast expanse of land that strattles the border of Arizona and Utah on the Navajo Nation. There is a small fee to visit the park and travel the well travelled roads of all the other visitors but the best views can be had by hiring a Navajo guide and getting out in a 4WD vehicle. The red mesas, buttes and arches are best photographed at the two ends of the day. I took a sunrise and sunset tour and captured this image about 30 minutes after sunrise.

Antelope Fire—Antelope Canyon—Navajo Nation
Antelope canyon is located on the Navajo Nation just outside Page Arizona and right near to Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam. There are actually two Antelope Canyons, upper and lower. I prefer upper, although it is shorter it provides more striking images and has higher vaulted ceilings. The Antelope Canyons are a slot canyon and if you time it right you will see the sun shining thru the seam at the top of the canyon down to the canyon floor. This light lasts for only an hour or two per day. As it is quite dark in the canyon a tripod is needed and exposures are quite long. The long exposure provided the opportunity to “create” flames by throwing dust from the floor into the shaft of light and while the lens in open the dust filters thought the light giving unique images

Yellowstone is well known for Old Faithful and we went to the staged show and saw the geyser perform almost on the minute. But there are much more interesting sights around the hot pools of Yellowstone Park. This remnant of a tree trunk must have been able to put up with the high temperatures for a long time until it withered away amongst the mineral deposits that created the bright rust colored earth.

The snow topped Mt. Rainier provides beautiful landscapes from any direction. The reflection lakes provide some of the best images with the view of the mountain as it reflects in the still waters of the lakes. The two challenges are to arrive early enough so the breezes of the day have not started and hope that the clouds have cleared from the mountain.
Mt. Rainier national park has many lakes to provide excellent reflections. I particularly like this image as it captures the sky and although I knew the lakes had many fish I didn’t know I had captured several in this frame until I made a larger image.

If you look closely you should be able to find one fish off to the right of center and several more coming up for a little feeding.

Touring through Banff National Park near the end of the fall season can bring many surprises. As we drove up through higher elevations we were greeted by a strong early season storm. This photo was taken just after noon with the sun nearly blotted out by the snow. The glacial lake was not frozen this early in the season so its azure hue caused by the minerals in the glacier run off can still be seen.

Touring through Banff National Park near the end of the fall season can bring many surprises. As we drove up through higher elevations we were greeted by a strong early season storm. We had stopped at the lake shore earlier for lunch and a few photos and thought the view from above would be even better and we were not disappointed. The glacial lake was almost iridescent as its azure hue provided a startling contrast to the new snowfall and the portions of the evergreens that were yet to be covered.

In mid-October I attended an exhibition at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. The leaves in Waveny Park were a mixture of colors from those trees that had turned as well as others still waiting to show their colors. I decided to walk out behind the arts center and explore the grounds. It was a little after 6PM and the sun was heading down for the day. I came across a small pond that was lined with trees of many types. This was a very still and dark water usually produced by many seasons of leaves composting in the bottom. It provided a perfect mirror for the reflection of the sun off the tops of the trees across the pond and when cropped closely all looks upside down. I included a small amount of the near shoreline to allow the viewer to orient themselves after a time.

The Mystic Seaport is an excellent location to photograph old sailing vessels but there are many other locations along the river to catch a view of a sail at anchor. During the winter the water is usually calmer early in the day which is great for reflections. One of the best viewing spots is on the grounds of the Mystic Art Association which is nearer to the mouth of the river. This cold New Years Eve day provided a nice blend of dark winter clouds with the warming of the sun and a slight current to the river which feathered the masts in the reflection giving a more painterly look to the photograph.

The Northern Cascades north east of Seattle have a lot of pristine scenery. We stayed in a small town in a group of cabins and would venture out early in the day to scout for photo opportunities of the broad and clear stretches of land. Just outside the town there was this field of forgotten objects. The light early in the day was coming from the wrong direction so I planned to return at least one day just in time to catch the afternoon light.

Salisbury Cathedral
I visited Salisbury Cathedral late one November day and almost didn’t go in feeling that the light after sunset would provide little to photograph. I was quite wrong and was rewarded by many sights of the cathedrals interior expertly illuminated. This small chapel off the north isle projected interesting shadows and shafts of light that might not be seen during the daylight.

Mt. Rainier national park has more than the mountain and reflections from the many lakes. The runoff from the mountain snow spawns many waterfalls throughout the area. This one I especially like because of the thin wispy nature of a portion of the falls due to the wind flowing through the gorge. If you happen to get to the falls at the right time of day the mist generated by the wind and the falls creates a perpetual rainbow.

While we lived in England we travelled to many spectacular gardens. These trips provided countless images of flora during all the seasons. One garden we seemed to overlook was just a couple miles from our townhouse called Kew Gardens. As our time in England was winding down we decided to make the trip and I was rewarded by this image that was taken just after the misting of the lilies, which provided an almost painterly capture of their texture and color.

I visited Salisbury Cathedral late in the day in November and was initially concerned about the ability to capture any interesting images in a dark interior. I was surprised by the magnificent lighting of the interior which highlighted the textures and shapes throughout the medieval structure. A tripod was required for the multi-second exposures and I was pleased that I was able to setup without restriction. I got lost in the moment going around the various locations capturing many vantages and lost track of the time. This last image that I took during that afternoon shows the 2.5 second path of one of the clergy coming toward me to politely remind me that parishioners would soon be arriving for service and that this would indeed be my last image.
Looking-BackLooking Back

This photo was taken on a back road on Cape Cod; it was a grey drizzly day near the end of February, about 3:30 in the afternoon and approaching sunset. As we passed by the mirror I noticed potential in a less than perfect image. After taking the exposure I worked on the image with Photoshop and after a good number of hours and over seven layers produced the image I titled Looking Back. I first made a selection of the mirror and applied a warming photo filter. I then increased the saturation and contrast of the mirror, which gives it the warm glow around the setting sun. The image looked too detailed so I applied a lens blur filter which softened the image. Now I felt it was too soft with no point of focus to the observer. So, I finally erased the blur over the road and house to provide something to draw you into the experience.

I was quite wrong and was rewarded by many sights of the cathedrals interior expertly illuminated. The shadows thrown by the various structures played across the walls and floor throughout. I especially liked the shadows cast by these wrought iron dividers which separated the south wall entrance to the north isle of the cathedral and the shaft of light seen through two columns.

On the way to Pomfret on cloudy day I noticed an old red barn that was placed right at the entrance to the Audubon trailwood at the Edwin Way Teale Memorial Sanctuary. After visiting The Celebrations Gallery and Shoppes I decided to stop and do a little exploring. The barn had been painted bright red probably several times over its lifetime and the texture of the wood was fascinating. On further examination I found an old wooden clad silo. The ends of the strips of wood were reinforced with a thin steel plate to hold them in place. One of these seams must have had water seep in over a number of seasons causing the wood to swell and during one freezing winter the seam stress was too much for the little steel plate and it snapped open. Many seasons of rain and wind caused the wood to further weather and the metal to rust providing this image in time.

At the very back of the Salisbury Cathedral lays the tomb of St Osmund in the Trinity Chapel. St. Osmund was the bishop of Salisbury and died in 1099. His tomb was moved to the Cathedral after dedication in 1258. This chapel was lit by only two candles and a glow from the cobalt blue 'Prisoners of Conscience” stained glass window. This image was taken after sunset with only small illumination from the window which required a 15 second exposure with a high ISO speed of 640 to create a sufficient exposure.

I got to the floating market outside of Bangkok in the traditional way by long tail boat and was dropped off at one of the commercial piers. All during the day I took many photographs from the shoreline and from the vantage points provided by the walkways across the water. I kept avoiding a guide trying to talk me into taking his boat along the waterways. I finally gave in a paid him for the paddling among the sellers of goods. I wish I had listed to him the first moment he asked because I got the best photographs travelling at the same level as all the merchants.

While out in Santa Fe New Mexico, I wanted to capture a night photo of what is reportedly the oldest church in the United States, the San Miguel Mission Chapel. The photos were OK but not spectacular. I was distracted as I was wondering how we were going to find the restaurant we had reservations for that night. A place that came highly recommended called The Pink Adobe. After finishing the mission shoot, I turned around and was greeted by this scene. Not only did I find the restaurant directly across the street but a great image with the custom bike parked out front awaiting its night rider.
The Ranchos Church

While staying in Taos New Mexico I heard about the “Old Mission Church”. It was only mile or so from our hotel so we went by in the afternoon and I took several photos but all along I was wondering how it might look at night. There were several spotlights around the grounds that gave me the indication that it might be a better photo in the evening. That night we came back and it was transformed by the lighting with the structure jumping out against the moonless sky. The sodium vapor street light initially gave me concern but their tight spectrum of yellow green light just added another dimension to this fortress like structure. If you’re ever in Santa Fe look for the old village of Ranchos De Taos which was settled in 1716 and you will find the mission which was completed in 1815.

This ancient doorway led out of the south transept of the Winchester cathedral to a stairway that takes you to the library and triforium gallery. I felt the colors and textures of the stone framework and the handmade hinges on the door provided a portal back into the history of the cathedral that dates back to 1079.

There is a nice nature walk just outside the center of Stony Creek that takes you across and old rail bridge and through salt marsh fields. It was very natural and open until I came to an old foundation that was the canvas for all the local aspiring graffiti artists. Its stark contrast to its surroundings made me realize the impact we can have on nature.
